great pen/great price
By Karen A. Logue
I wanted to give a stylish, but not too expensive pen as a gift. This pen is elegant, with a comfortable feel and writes smoothly. The box is very handsome and would compliment any desk top.

Looks nice in most ways, limited refill options
By A Customer
Sheaffer's black/nickel Prelude is a lot less than the black/gold version. This is annoying because gold plating costs almost nothing. Many manufacturers don't charge any extra for it, but Sheaffer does.If you like this one, it's one of the few options for a recognizable brand at the same price which has a perfectly polished finish and a traditional appearance. The smooth finish is not obvious from Sheaffer's stock photos, which almost make it look like a matte finish.Visually, it has two issues. There is a plastic dot on top of the cap (not the trademark white dot on the clip). That would be fine, as many manufacturers have a plastic part somewhere, but Sheaffer didn't just use a black or white color, they tried to do a fake pearl thing, which I think looks even worse than plain plastic. Having a white dot for a trademark, why didn't Sheaffer just make a white dot and avoid the cheesy fake pearl? The second issue is the front end of the pen body. It is mainly plastic (with only the tip being metal), while a lot of other high-end pens are made mainly from metal from tip to threads, sometimes with a plastic covering over the grip area.Functionally, Sheaffer's rollerball refill isn't any better than average, and is a proprietary size and shape so you can't use any of the many different standard rollerball refills. None of the major office stores carry Sheaffer's mediocre refill. The main benefit to this model is its relatively low price compared to a Parker or Waterman of similar appearance. However, Waterman and Parker's pens are made in France, while Sheaffer has opted for Chinese production. That actually makes the Sheaffer a little bit on the expensive side compared to generic Chinese pens of similar quality. If you don't mind paying a good deal more, my preference is any of Parker's rollerball pens, which have a proprietary refill but exceptionally reliable ink flow. If you don't need your pen to look like a Sheaffer or Parker, Waterford's Claria model with the black/chrome finish has a full metal pen body and uses a standard-sized rollerball refill which will be available in many stores and in different colors and ink types.

A wonderful pen for your desk
By Matthew Arbuckle
This pen has a nice weight to it and is one you can really get your hand around; and it is also well balanced. It has grooves under the cap near the tip where your fingers can comfortably hold the pen to make writing easy. The Sheaffer ink is very good and the tip of the pen itself is spring loaded so if you push on the paper a little too hard, there is a little "give" so that writing will remain smooth. I keep one at my desk for signing my signature because it is so nice, comfortable and handsome. I have also given many as gifts and always receive compliments about how classy and attractive the pen is. So it makes a great gift, no question. The only drawback is that the cap doesn't fit perfectly on the butt of the pen when writing, but it doesn't fly off, either. For the price and for how nice the pen is, this is an excellent value.
