5A Great Machine if You Need the Quality
By Steve K.
Having never purchased a Festool product before I was very torn between this machine and some of the other discounted routers available. It finally came down to quality and precision for me and so I "took the plunge" with the OF 1400 EQ. Let me begin by saying that this is a very high quality and well thought out machine which is evident from the moment the packaging is opened. I really like the precision depth adjustment which was one of my primary reasons for making this selection. I was surprised at the smoothness of the machine while running. What really blew me away me was the run-out or lack thereof of the collet assembly. I performed a comparison using the same 1/4" solid carbide bit in this router and my old plunge router. The really shocking part was that the slot I cut with the OF 1400 measured .250" with my dial calipers - the same as the cutter diameter. The slot which I cut with my old plunge router, using the same cutter measured .258", which I've found to be fairly typical to my experience with that machine. Having an occupation as a machine designer I know that this level of precision does not come cheap.Other thoughts. Dust pickup when cutting a slot or performing edge work is very good. Visibility when using the clear dust shroud is understandably reduced. fortunately, the base has center of bit markings. I love the Plug-It cord that disconnects at the handle making bit changes safer and quicker. The adapter pocket for snap-in template guides works very well also. When installed template guides are well centered and have zero radial play.Negatives - I found the handle and round grip somewhat challenging at first, although it is feeling more comfortable as I get used to it. I'm finding the twist action required to lock the height my biggest challenge - it is a bit un-natural for me having used a standard D handle unit with a finger lock plunge action for many years. Again, this is something I'm getting used to.In summary, I would say that this is definitely not a beginner's tool as many of the finer points and qualities would be overlooked. Likewise if the precision that this machine offers is not required then there are truck loads of cheaper units out there. If on the other hand you can use the precision that this machine offers and can appreciate it's many well thought out features I would recommend it over other machines.

5Quite the piece of machinery
By Evan A. Frank
I'm not a big woodworker, but I've got several big projects coming up so I figured I'd invest in a high quality router. Hopefully it will last forever. This is way more router than I need at the moment. It works nicely as a fixed depth router when the height is locked (the mechanism for this is very nice) although if you're only going to be doing fixed-depth routing a dedicated machine with lower handles might be a little easier to use. I love the trigger based control rather than the on-off toggle switch I've seen on other routers. The fine adjustment on the depth is really nice and I'm sure the dust collection will be nice once I am able to drop another $400 or so on a vacuum. My one complaint is that the tool in general seems a little delicate, like it would be much happier living in a workshop than being used in the field. The top dust collection shield scares me the most... once I let the router spring back up from the plunged position and the big bit that I was using snapped the cover right off. Nothing broke but it sure sounded painful. The motor, plunge rails, and handles feel very solid, however. I think for the simple rabbeting projects that I'm doing I would have been better off with a simple fixed router but I think this one will serve me well as I get into a larger variety of projects.

Festool is simply the Rolls Royce under the power tools! Since I bought my first plunge saw second hand about 5 years ago I never looked at another tool brand any more! Well worth the extra money considering the lifelong professionalism it will give you...
