Product was very simple to install, plug and play. Instructions were perfect, directs you to web for most up to date lightscribe drivers. Roxio installed fine (on a Vaio), but didnt seem to run real well, but no matter because I had been running full Nero for some time. All features of this new double sided, lightscribe drive were available under it.Burns DVDs lightening fast (as compared to my old 2X), and the lightscribe is "pretty darn cool". Eliminates most needs to do labels! (I say most only because it takes much more time to burn the label than to burn DVD so may not want it on all...). I did not try double sided, but that was not what made me buy.Buy it! Or, wait until Lightscribe 1.2 hardware comes out (supposed to be better contrast on labels).

This product was super easy to set up - just plug in the USB or FireWire cable and it's good to go. The software was quick to install.That would all be good, except:The software messed up my desktop settings. Not a huge deal, but each time I restart, I had to select my desktop view preferences/customization again.The drive has a fairly loud fan. (Other drives are silent.)The drive burned 6 audio CDs perfectly fine.Then I tried burning the lightscribe label. It did not work at all with the USB cable. I got "communication error" messages. Then I tried using the FireWire cable. It burned 6 labels fine. Then it would burn half-way through a label and stop, and I would get the same "communication error" message. This happened several times, until I gave up.I didn't bother trying tech support - things should work correctly right out of the box. And tech support phone hours were not 24/7, so I wouldn't have been able to try.I ended up getting another drive. I uninstalled the software that came with this Mad Dog drive, and my desktop settings are back to normal.

When the CD burner/DVD-ROM drive went out on my four year old Gateway PC, I decided to buy an external replacement drive. I read a lot of reviews. Some of the drives were noisy in operation, some were a bit flimsy, some operated intermittently (especially the Sonys), some had poor software included. I went to my local military exchange and found that they had this state-of-the-art double layer DVD/CD burner available. I decided to take a flyer with it. So far, I'm really glad I did. The drive is well built and comes in a glossy black and silver case. Both USB 2.0 and Firewire cables are included in the box, as is a stand so you can place the drive on its side. The installation instructions are quite clear and easy. Installation couldn't have been easier. I plugged the drive into a power outlet and connected it to the computer via a USA 2.0 hub. Upon bootup, the computer immedicately recognized it and Windows XP installed the necessary drivers. Installation took about three minutes total. The drive is quiet compared to most I've heard. It makes a muted hum when running full tilt. So far, it has read everything I put into it, CD and DVD. Tonight I will try to burn some disks and try the Lightscribe feature. I'll update the review and let you know how everything works. Oh, it also comes with a TWO year warranty instead of the usual one year.
