A solid chunk of brass!
By M. Armstrong
OK - so it's not really a SOLID chunk of brass, but the majority of the component is one large cast brass piece. A swivel ball with the rubber nozzles is held captive inside the entire assembly, which allows it to rotate (with a moderate amount of pressure required) about 25 degrees in either direction. So, when I bought these, I didn't even want to rough-in my drop ears in my shower since there's almost no information anywhere on the web about the spray pattern they make. My concern was that if I mounted them in the wrong spot, they would end up spraying the floor, my face, the wall, etc. So I waited for them to arrive before diagraming the rest of my plumbing. So, hopefully, the below information will help you make a more informed decision when you go to purchase these guys sight unseen. Bear in mind the following:1) They are quite small - this is not a bad thing, but they are approx 2" across the face. The nozzle also does not protrude beyond the body, but the body itself will sit proud of the finished surface by about an inch. So, they are not flush-mount, but they are low-profile (which I like).2) They are stated to flow with less than 1gpm on HansGrohe's website... they don't seem to change their spray pattern much with lower pressure, so they probably will work just fine in a situation where they are fed ~ 1gpm each, but for you fluid dynamics people out there, if you apply 50-60psi to one of these with enough volume, I'm almost positive they are flowing more than 1gpm each. Since I have about 6-7 gpm available total, 3 of these + a shower head is pushing it. Again, they will work at 1gpm, but they will flow more than that if you push them to.3) The spray pattern is a mostly-contained spray, conically shaped with the spray about 25 degrees from edge to edge. Geometrically I probably screwed up that explanation, but right around 12-15" from the spray surface, the diameter of the cross-section of the cone would be around 6" wide. I find this ideal since it isn't drenching everything around it.4) Moving the swivel ball inside the enclosure takes a little bit of effort. Frankly this is re-assuring since I wouldn't want something that was going to leak later. You can pivot the ball (though it doesn't look like a ball unless you were dissecting it) to suit your needs. If you receive these in the mail, understand that it takes a little more effort than you might expect to rotate the ball. At least it'll hold in place once it's there, right?5) The difference in price is due to a thin fascia piece that slips over the unit. I bought the "chrome" which is the cheapest and I suspect I'll regret having so much chrome in my shower, but for some odd reason I like the look of chrome. Anyway, unlike a lot of other fixtures which are chrome-plated plastic, this one is literally chromed metal. If you pay $60 more for the brushed nickel or something, you may end up feeling a little bit fleeced since you're paying a significant premium for such a small trim piece. But, alas, supply and demand dictates prices, not the cost of manufacturing. (Which confirms my suspicion that chrome is out of style.)6) Lastly, if it matters to you, these are said to be made in Germany. I'm reminded of the "shamwow" where we are told the Germans always make good stuff. Perhaps they do. I suspect they don't *always* make good stuff, but overall, these appear to be well made.I do not think these pieces will dissapoint anyone who picks them up. If you're estimating volume requirements, plan on a little more than 1gpm, keep the size in mind, prepare to get fleeced for brushed nickel or stainless, and read the installation guide for the set-back before installing a drop-ear elbow in your wall!
