5fast way to a matte finish, and fixes uneven-ness, too!
By John W. Wendt
So--you've just finished your table with a gloss varnish. Gloss varnishes are generally more durable than mattes, and some varnishes are only available in a gloss anyway. But--for your taste, it's too shiny. What to do? You can spend hours hand-sanding with a steel or specialty non-steel wool. Or, you can spend 20 minutes with an Abralon pad and your sander. Splash a little water onto your piece, and wet-sanding with the Abralon paper, you'll achieve your even, scratch-free matte with a lot less time and effort. It seems to give a much more even finish than wool sanding.Or maybe this is your situation: you've just sprayed or brush-painted a tabletop, and then you notice--a little lump there, a little uneven-ness here, a bubble or two--just doesn't look perfect. What to do? Hey, sand it down even with some 320 grit, then bring it up to a matte or semi-gloss using the Abralon paper. No re-coat needed! I have all 3 Abralon grits--1000, 2000, and 4000. The 4000 will give you a semi-gloss finish, while the 1000 and 2000 will give you matte finishes. Both are suitable, and you have to experiment with what looks best to you. I'm surprised how long these things last. The wet-sanding generally prevents the pad from getting clogged, and because you can remove and wash the pads, you can get out lumps of fine dust with little effort. Abralon will save you time and give you a beautiful finish. Highly recommended.
