great stuff
By Ian Peter Duke
This is good stuff. I have been doing graphic artwork for a long time (by hand and now computer), and this is what I have used on my desk. It's wonderful to be able to have a desk surface that can be cut on with things like a number 11 blade and immediately you can write a letter or a list with a nice ballpoint pen and have the smoothness which good quality vinyl offers. To make it even better, this version is translucent/clear, allowing my desk's birch tabletop to show through, or you could have pictures underneath. If you have a light table, this will protect the glass or plastic top, while allowing the light to shine through. It does stain, so using a permanent marker is bad, unless using something to prevent it from bleeding through (like a piece of heavy cardstock or smooth cardboard). It cleans up nicely with any decent household cleaner or even just a bit of glass cleaner and a paper towel. Flip it over and have a new surface again in two years, or after heavy use. Worth the cost to protect any desk surface that gets a lot of use. Will dent with heavy objects, but probably recover eventually - it's vinyl.

Dissapointing product
By Mark
I ordered the translucent version of the Vyco board cover for a 30"x65" black computer desk top which showed every smudge and fingerprint. I figured the translucent vinyl would by easier to keep clean looking and would fit in best with my black and silver computer, monitor, and peripherals. I am a professional artist for the last 45 years and have a beautiful old oak four drawer drafting table with a Borco green/tan board cover which has served me very well for many years. This Vyco sheet that I ordered came rolled up in a long box without any tube in the middle (WHY NOT?), so when I unrolled it, it had ripples in it every couple of inches. Also, only one side (with the indented manufacturers info all along it) was straight and neither end had been cut square with the straight edge. It seems to be about the same thickness as my old Borco board, but not as heavy. These two factors make it much more difficult to get it to lay flat, even over time. I have had it laying flat on my desk now for 2 days and can still see the ripples in it, and the edges still curl a bit. Last night, I covered the whole surface with heavy books, which helped some. This morning I tried using the Alvin double sided tape which is recommended for this board cover, but wound up taking it off again because it was very visible through the translucent vinyl, with a wave like pattern of the glue throughout the tape, destroying the whole purpose of buying the board...to make a clean, professional looking table top. It took quite of bit of time and scrubbing to get all the glue cleaned off the edge of the vinyl.Maybe the non translucent versions of this Vyco board are heavier like my old Borco and would lay flatter? The double sided tape would work fine with them at least. For now, I just cut my translucent sheet to size and have it laying on top of the desk with no tape holding the edges which curl up slightly all the way around. Other than that, I like the translucent effect very much, and it is certainly easy to clean and doesn't show smudges hardly at all. Unfortunately, no one seems to make a heavier translucent vinyl product.
