If you aren't familiar with this class of rust treatment products, this is a rust converter, not remover. It works by chemically reacting with the oxidized iron and producing a black paint-like surface. In the absence of rust, it just produces some staining. This product does not remove rust, so you need to prepare the surface by first removing loose rust.The product is water based. That means cleanup is fairly easy before it has dried. (I usually apply it with a foam brush, which I then rinse off after.) But this also means that if you apply too much product on horizontal surfaces, the pooled product can actually cause more rust. Additionally, the product directions do warn to let an item fully dry before top coating. And that you can't top coat with water-based paints, unless you use an oil-based primer.This Permatex 81773 version doesn't seem to behave any differently from other brands of rust converters that have the same milky tan appearance. The product page here claims this version is "Body Filler Compatible," but the bottle itself makes no mention of that. More importantly, it says, "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR AUTOMOTIVE EXTERIOR SHEET METAL REPAIRS." (No explanation for why this is the case.) Ummm...that kind of makes the body filler issue irrelevant, as automotive exterior sheet metal is the primary place where you use body filler.I thought maybe Amazon sent the wrong product, but I verified the item number matches.

We have a large wrought iron wine cage/furniture that I rescued from a friend's yard, and which spent a year outside at our house before I decided to clean it up and bring it in. As a result, it was pretty rusty. I took a wire brush to it, scrubbing away all loose rust, then hit it with a pressure washer and let it dry. I then applied this magic Permatex 81773 Rust Treatment. The results were amazing: the rust turned into a deep black shell, effectively turning the old rusty furniture into the nice deep black we wanted. We saw no need for further painting; moved it into the house where it now looks great holding our wine, glasses and plates.I'm not particularly handy and had not worked much with wrought iron (which is probably why it sat in the yard for so long getting rustier). A little Internet searching turned me on to using a "rust converter". Finding several brands on Amazon, this one was most cost effective. And having now used it for one restoration project, it worked exactly as promised.

I use this for the frame of my SUV, it was little rusty and I want to stop the rust getting worse. I accidentally dripped few drops when apply it to the frame. and after few hours the drops on the driveway became hard and solid plastic like thing, and hard to remove, I feel this will do a good job prevent the rust on the SUV.
